81% of Californians say they don’t know what a CCA is

Apr 15, 2026

Trust is essential for CCAs.

But before trust can develop, customers first need to know who you are.

Our recent survey surfaced a challenge many CCAs are already navigating:

81% of respondents in our recent market research said they do not know what a CCA is.

That number doesn’t necessarily reflect dissatisfaction. More often, it reflects something simpler: many residents have never clearly encountered the CCA brand.

And if customers don’t recognize the organization behind the programs serving them, it becomes much harder to build trust, participation, or long-term engagement.

For CCAs, brand awareness is the foundation of community engagement. If customers don’t know who you are, they can’t take advantage of what you offer.

THE AWARENESS CHALLENGE

Energy can be confusing. Most residents interact with their utility, see contractors installing equipment, and hear about programs from local governments without a clear picture of who does what.

You operate right in the middle of that landscape. Even when customers benefit from your programs, they may not always realize where those benefits come from.

That’s not unusual. Research from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory has found that many customers don’t even realize when their community transitions to a CCA.

When the organization behind the programs isn’t visible, it becomes much harder to build awareness and trust.

VISIBILITY CREATES FAMILIARITY

Building brand awareness isn’t just about recognition. It’s about familiarity.

When customers repeatedly encounter an organization in meaningful ways, it becomes easier to understand what that organization does and why it matters.

For you, that visibility often grows through everyday community presence, such as:

  • Participating in local events
  • Partnering with trusted community organizations
  • Supporting neighborhood initiatives
  • Hosting informational meetings or public forums

Over time, those touchpoints help transform a CCA from an abstract concept into a recognizable part of the community.

And familiarity builds credibility.

BUILDING THE FOUNDATION FOR TRUST

Most CCAs are already doing important work in their communities. The opportunity isn’t to start from scratch.

It’s to ensure the organization behind the work is visible, recognizable, and easy for residents to understand.

When brand visibility becomes intentional and consistent, awareness begins to grow.

And awareness is where trust begins.

HELPING CCAs STRENGTHEN BRAND PRESENCE

At REACH, we help CCAs translate strong programs into clear, visible community presence.

That includes refining brand messaging, aligning communications with engagement strategies, and helping organizations show up consistently across the communities they serve.

Before customers can trust an organization or take advantage of its programs, they first need to recognize who is serving them.
