What Makes a Great Community Electrification Roadmap

Jul 11, 2025Communications Strategy

As communities across the country move toward a more electric future, it’s worth noting that it’s not just about charging stations or electric vehicles. The story is about people. It’s about aligning technology, policy, and local ambition in a way that feels achievable, inclusive, and beneficial to all.

With Recharge America, we’ve had the opportunity to help many communities shape their electrification goals, like our ongoing collaboration with the city of Mankato, Minnesota.

How did we create our blueprint for success?

Community Vision

The best electrification plans begin by listening. In Mankato, that meant gathering input from residents, city officials, utility partners, educational institutions, and local businesses. The result? A shared vision that centered on economic opportunity, public health, and local pride.

By identifying what mattered most to the people of Mankato, the plan became more than a document. It became a reflection of community values.

Think and Speak Locally

No two cities are the same. What works in San Diego might not make sense in southern Minnesota. Mankato’s plan is rooted in its unique geography, infrastructure, and readiness. With a growing EV market, nearby higher education institutions like Minnesota State University, Mankato, and a supportive utility (Xcel Energy), the city was poised for action. It just needed a roadmap.

Recharge America helped Mankato assess its current EV and energy landscape, identify strategic locations for public charging, and highlight opportunities to electrify its municipal fleet and local transportation systems.

Build a Network of Partners

Electrification isn’t a solo act. In Mankato, the plan brought together schools, government agencies, workforce development groups, and energy innovation advocates to create a coalition that could sustain momentum. By highlighting these partnerships in the plan, the community is now equipped to apply for funding, attract investment, and coordinate implementation with greater efficiency.

Make it Actionable, and Adaptable

One of the standout features of Mankato’s roadmap is its clarity. It outlines short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals, from increasing public EV charger installations to expanding EV education. However, it also leaves room for community feedback and future advancements in technology.

Recharge America also created a public-facing version of the roadmap to help residents understand where the city is headed and how they can get involved.

Measure Progress and Celebrate Wins

An electrification plan is a living document. Mankato’s success will come from tracking outcomes, sharing updates, and celebrating both big and small wins. Whether it’s a new charger downtown or an EV ride-and-drive at a local school, every milestone counts.

A great electrification plan doesn’t just prepare for the future. It inspires action today.

If your community is ready to explore what electrification could look like and how to make it real, Recharge America is here to help. Our work in Mankato is just one example of how tailored, community-driven planning can accelerate progress, one neighborhood at a time.
